Jam Radio's Frequently Asked Questions
I have an idea for Jam Radio. What next?
Get in touch with us with your ideas. If you’re unsure of how to translate the idea into radio, we’ll help you through the process. Likewise, if you already have everything sorted, we’ll just help you to get your show online.
What is the format of the station?
We are an online-only station. Jam provides on-demand streaming of locally made arts/culture/issues programmes. The most recently made programmes are on the audio player located on the main page of www.jamradio.co.nz. After a couple of weeks they are archived on the site and can be accessed and listened to by clicking on tags or show names.
What kind of shows do you accept?
Pretty much everything! To name a few, on the site there are literary interviews, readings, poetry shows, indie, blues, folk and electronica music shows, education shows, social and political issues programmes and panel discussions. The only programmes we don’t accept are those that encourage illegal activities, or are in bad taste. This could mean a show that was racist or sexist, or promoted drug culture, etc. We retain the right to not accept shows that we believe aren’t positive programming.
What are your facilities like?
We are located in the sound area of the Depot Artspace, Devonport. We have a separate radio room for recording, editing and training. For interviews involving many people, or for recording musicians, radio plays, etc, we use the adjacent Depot Sound recording studio. Both areas are equipped with ProTools software and have a large variety of microphones for different purposes.
How do I record and edit a show?
There are many ways to do this. If you want entire control over it, we can train you in the recording equipment and editing software. The first hour of training is free of charge. Alternatively a Jam Radio staff can member to help you with recording and post production. Part of our mission is to get people trained up in all aspects of radio production. This includes programme planning, interview etiquette and more.
What is your audience?
People that support creativity, innovation, and local media production. We regularly receive great feedback from listeners about the local content and range of programming. As we are online only, we have listeners from about 30 countries worldwide, with most tuning in from New Zealand, Canada, Germany and the US.
What about gaining sponsorship for my show?
If you are making a regular show, then it’s a great idea to get a sponsor/sponsors involved, therefore creating links from other sources to your show. If you have little experience in sponsorship, we have a basic guide which we can go through with you. We do not accept some types of sponsorship, and encourage securing ethical companies and businesses for product/financial support. For example we are unlikely to accept sponsorship from a cigarette company. Please talk with us further about your potential sponsors!
